What makes a good teacher?

I have had my fair share of good and bad teachers throughout my K-12 years. I have had substitute teachers who sit there and stare at the wall expecting that the students know what to do. I have also had teachers who go above and beyond to help me succeed in my courses. In elementary school, I had trouble in math understanding fractions and multiplication. I knew that I needed help and there was a great after school tutoring program that I attended. Mr. Huggins who was in charge of the tutoring program, truly took time out of his afternoon to help students who didn't understand the material. He was the only teacher there and left his room open to all students. I appreciate the amount of time he took everyday to be there, it showed dedication and his love for teaching.

I know that a good teacher possesses these qualities because Mr. Huggins was definitely a good one. I could never say anything bad about him because even after I was done with elementary school, I would go back and see him every 2 years to catch up. A good teacher does not have qualities of those in Lorde's essay. Teachers should be able to engage their students and make learning interactive and fun. Teachers should also be passionate and always be willing to lend a helping hand.
