Lorde's Essay

Audre Lorde’s essay was filled with great descriptions about her experience through her early years of education. She adequately illustrated how her teachers were and they all seemed to have quite nasty attitudes. “Miss Teacher” did not seem like she was the type of teacher who treated her students as equals. I was surprised at her reaction when Audre wrote her first name and last name instead of writing just the letter “A.” It is unfortunate that she didn’t applaud her for her success, but instead shamed her because she did not follow directions. As following directions is important, I think it is tremendous that she knows more than she should as a kindergartner. I thought that it was great that her mom took her to the catholic school and was able to get her into the first grade. Audre described Sister Mary of Perpetual Help as big, blond and someone who cared for Colored and Indian children of America. I thought that it was ridiculous that Sister MPH thought it was a good idea to separate the children into the "Fairies" and the "Brownies." I also thought it was absurd that instead of helping Audre try to learn her numbers, she was punished for not knowing her numbers. It is very unfortunate that Audre had to experience such terrible teachers.
